FIXED LIMIT POKER OVERVIEW

Fixed Limit is the most basic form of betting and is probably the recommended way for you to start playing online poker. There's no need for you to worry or stress about how much to bet or raise your opponent as the options are fixed and limited.

In Fixed Limit Poker you only have the choice of set betting amounts and a fixed number of possible raises. I'll use a $1/$2 Texas Holdv?em cash game as an example:

The blinds will be $1/$2.

In the first round of betting you can only bet $1 or raise exactly $1 more than the previous bet. There may only be a maximum of 3 raises (4 total bets) after which you can call or fold but not raise further.

After the flop you can again only make $1 bets. The raises can again only be exactly $1 more than the previous bet. Once again the maximum number of raises may be only 3 (4 bets in total).

On the turn card the limits increase, you can now make $2 bets, with raises exactly $2 more than the previous bet. The maximum number of raises still remains 3 (4 bets in total).

When the river card is dealt the previous betting round rules apply.

In some games there is no limit to the number of raises allowed when a betting round starts with just two players remaining.

While any pots that you win are probably going to be fairly small in Fixed Limit Poker, on the other side of the coin, the pots that you lose shouldn't be too expensive for you either. Because it doesn't cost too much for an opponent to call you compared to the size of the pot on offer, when playing Fixed Limit Poker, it is therefore much more difficult to bluff and you need much more control in your play. Fixed Limit Poker also makes it easier to work out your chances of winning (card odds) against the cost of calling (pot odds), as it's easier to work out how much will be in the pot.
