Multi-Table Tournaments Strategies & Tips

  • Know the tournament rules and prize details before the tournament even begins. How many players have entered, what is the prize structure and how many places are being paid. This way you can make sure you don't waste hours of valuable poker time, just to win a small cash prize.
  • Similar to the tip above, make sure you have the spare time that is required. You have to go into these tournaments planning to win them, so if you have to go to work in 2 hours then there will simply be no way you can make it to the final table in that time so therefore you shouldn't waste your entrance fee.
  • Think of the tournament as being split into 3 stages: have patience in the early stage of a single-table tournament, you can't win the tournament at this point but you can certainly get knocked out. Play a smart tight game when the blinds are low and focus only on good starting hands. The size of a players chip stack is irrelevant at this point so don't feel any pressure.
  • In the middle stage of the single-table tournament it is important to get used to moving tables, don't get too comfortable on a particular table and when you do get moved make sure that you quickly work out how each new player likes to play and who you feel are the better players.
  • Mixing up your style of play and the way you play certain types of hands is not so important in multi-table tournaments due to the constant table movement. You still need to be wary however, as better quality players will quickly identify your pattern of play and use that information to take your chips.
  • The final stage of a multi-table tournament tend to get quite frantic and the size of your chip stack will decide the way you have to play your poker hands. If you are fairly short stacked then you are forced into playing hands that you normally wouldn't, but you must keep up with the size of the blinds and to do this may mean some drastic all-ins.
  • If you are well placed in the final stages of a multi-table tournament then it's a case of chip management. The game of poker won't be played in a normal way and it's highly likely you won't see a river card without an All-in bet already in place. The trick is to bide your time, attack short stacks while in position and don't allow any player the chance to see a flop cheaply.
  • Always remember that when there are less players remaining at the table and hence less cards dealt in the game. This means that poker hands that aren't ranked as highly in the early stages of the game, rise in value at later stages. You can therefore be more aggressive with a lower quality of hand in the very final stage of a multi-table tournament.
