Omaha Hi Lo Strategies and Tips

  • Your main goal in Omaha Hi Lo Poker is to win both the high and the low hands. Play the game with an open mindset, good cards can be low cards as well as high cards. Your objective should be to win both hands and this focus should help you decide on your cards selection.
  • Due to the high number of card combinations in Omaha Hi Lo Poker, bluffing isn't such a big factor compared to other forms of Poker. So if a player raises you after you've seen the flop, there is a pretty good chance that they have a very strong hand and you have a big decision to make. You should only stay in the hand if you feel that you've got an even stronger hand, but if you're not 100% sure then you've got to throw them away.
  • The most popular mistake for Omaha Hi Lo players is playing too many hands. With four hole cards to choose from and two combinations of two hole cards for each hand (Hi and Lo), it feels like you're always in with a chance of hitting something. The trick in Omaha Hi Lo is to be disciplined and if you don't get a great flop then you have to consider throwing in your cards.
  • Don't forget that to end up with a low hand, your Hole Cards can only contribute two cards which are 8 or lower, then at least three of the community cards must be 8 or lower as well (community cards will not contain three cards 8 or lower approximately 30% of the time). Without five cards that are 8 or lower you can't make a low hand and the best high hand takes the pot.
  • Don't solely focus on your hand, take into account the actions of other players and what type of hands that their actions suggest that they may have. This may lead you to fold a strong hand if you feel that, with the community cards available and the betting behaviour, a player may have an even better hand.
  • This may sound a little complicated but once you're thinking about what your opponent has, you should try thinking about what your opponent may think that you have. It's simply a case of putting yourself in your opponents shoes and trying to think what your actions may be telling him.
  • It's important to find a game with a stakes level that you feel comfortable at. You should be playing at stakes that are not so high that you are afraid to make the moves you need to make, but not so low that you play carelessly. If you're not sure, err on the side of caution and play lower stakes. You can always progress to higher stakes if you're sure that you're not being challenged enough.
  • Always analyse your play. Look back at important hands and consider what you did right and what you did wrong, and how it impacted upon your results. If you identify a real error in your play, you can then try to correct it before your next game.
